Common Grade 7 Strand Tree Cable

Seven-strand, left-hand lay, corrosion-resistant utility-grade steel cable has long been a staple of tree cabling throughout North America. First used in the early 1900s, this traditional cabling method remains largely unchanged and continues to be used within tree canopies to provide supplemental support between limbs or other tree parts.

Static steel cabling can help reduce movement and provide added support against forces such as wind and ice loading. However, cabling cannot guarantee that a tree or limb will not fail, nor can it correct existing structural defects or undesirable growth patterns.

Common-grade cable is malleable enough to be spliced by hand, allowing it to be self-wrapped around a thimble. Extra-high-strength (EHS) cable provides greater strength but is significantly stiffer and cannot be hand-spliced. EHS cable is required when using Rigguy wire stops.

For all eye-splice connections, a heavy-duty thimble should be used to help protect the cable from abrasion and premature wear.

When anchoring cable ends, eye bolts installed completely through the target branch with a washer beneath the nut are generally recommended. Some arborists have moved away from using J-lags because of their more limited holding power, particularly in limbs that may be hollow or structurally compromised.

As with any supplemental support system, the long-term goals of the installation should be carefully considered. Static cabling systems require ongoing inspection and maintenance, and alternative dynamic support systems may be appropriate depending on the tree, site conditions and desired outcome. Periodic inspection should be performed in accordance with applicable industry standards, including ANSI A300.
