Notch Hook Ups: Helmet-Mounted Hearing Protection

When you're working in the canopy, communication matters. Whether you're coordinating a complex rigging operation, working with a ground crew, or simply checking in with your climbing partner, being able to communicate clearly can make the job more efficient and help everyone stay on the same page.

Notch Hook Ups: Helmet-Mounted Hearing Protection & Communication

When you're working in the canopy, staying connected with your crew matters. Whether you're coordinating a rigging operation, working with ground support, or communicating with another climber, clear communication helps keep everyone on the same page.

At the same time, working around chainsaws, chippers and other machinery means hearing protection is an important part of your PPE.

The Notch Hook Ups Helmet Mount Earmuffs bring these two needs together. Featuring integrated speakers designed to connect with compatible SENA communication systems, Hook Ups allow arborists to communicate with their crew while wearing hearing protection.

Important: The Notch Hook Ups are helmet-mounted earmuffs with integrated speakers. The SENA communication system is sold separately. A helmet is also not included.

Why Hearing Protection Matters in Arboriculture

Arborists regularly work around equipment that produces high noise levels, including chainsaws, chippers, stump grinders and other machinery. Repeated exposure to excessive noise can lead to permanent hearing damage, often without noticeable warning signs.

Wearing appropriate hearing protection is essential, but traditional earmuffs can make communication difficult, particularly when working with a ground crew or other climbers.

The Notch Hook Ups offer a practical solution by combining helmet-mounted hearing protection with integrated communication speakers.

Meet the Notch Hook Ups

The Notch Hook Ups are helmet-mounted earmuffs with integrated speakers designed for use with compatible SENA communication systems.

Rather than modifying traditional earmuffs to accommodate communication equipment, Hook Ups feature built-in speakers while maintaining their certified hearing protection rating when used as intended.

Here's what they bring to your setup:

  • NRR 25: Certified hearing protection to help reduce exposure to hazardous jobsite noise.
  • Integrated speakers: Connect to compatible SENA communication systems to keep you in contact with your crew.
  • Purpose-built design: Integrated speakers eliminate the need to drill holes into the earmuffs to accommodate communication equipment.
  • Comfortable fit: Designed for extended wear during demanding workdays.
  • Helmet compatibility: Designed for standard helmet attachment slots and compatible with several popular arborist helmet brands, including KASK, Petzl, and Studson. Compatibility varies by helmet model.

Whether you're upgrading an existing setup or putting together a new communication system, Hook Ups offer a convenient way to combine hearing protection and communication.

Staying Connected in the Canopy

Communication is especially important when the climber and ground crew are working together.

A climber might need to coordinate a lowering operation, ask for a rope adjustment, or communicate with the ground crew before making a cut. Meanwhile, the ground crew needs to be able to relay information without relying entirely on hand signals or shouting over equipment.

A compatible SENA communication system paired with the Notch Hook Ups helps make those conversations easier.

With the speakers integrated into the earmuffs, you can communicate without having to remove your hearing protection every time you need to talk to your crew.

This can be particularly useful during:

  • Rigging operations where timing and coordination matter.
  • Climbing jobs with limited visibility between the climber and ground crew.
  • Work around noisy equipment.
  • Larger jobs where multiple crew members need to stay connected.

Of course, communication equipment is only one part of a safe worksite. Proper training, clear communication procedures, and appropriate PPE remain essential.

Getting the Right Fit: Installation and Compatibility

Proper fit is essential for hearing protection to work as intended.

The Notch Hook Ups are designed for helmets with compatible earmuff attachment slots. They fit several popular arborist helmet brands, although some models may require specific adapters.

Before installation, keep a few things in mind:

  1. Check helmet compatibility: Confirm that your helmet has the appropriate attachment slots and supports the Hook Ups.
  2. Use the correct adapters: Some helmet models require specific adapter clips. Follow the manufacturer's installation instructions.
  3. Position the earmuffs correctly: The cushions should fully enclose your ears and create a snug seal against your head.
  4. Check the fit: Adjust the earmuffs until they sit comfortably with even pressure around your ears.
  5. Inspect the seal: Make sure the earmuffs aren't obstructed by the helmet's inner lining, straps or other accessories.

Taking Care of Your Hook Ups

Like any piece of PPE, your hearing protection needs regular inspection and maintenance. The earmuff cushions and foam inserts are particularly important for maintaining a proper fit, comfort and noise reduction.

To keep your Hook Ups in good condition:

  • Clean regularly: Wash the outside of the earmuffs with mild soap and water.
  • Avoid harsh cleaners: Don't use solvents such as alcohol or acetone, or products containing lanolin.
  • Store properly: Keep them in a clean, dry place away from direct sunlight.
  • Avoid excessive heat: Don't store them in temperatures above 130°F (55°C), such as behind a vehicle windshield.
  • Inspect for wear: Check the cushions, foam inserts and other components for cracks, damage or deterioration.
  • Replace worn components: Notch recommends replacing the foam liners and cushions at least twice a year to help maintain noise reduction, hygiene and comfort.

Replacement Hygiene Kits are also available for the Notch Hook Ups.

Notch recommends retiring its helmet-mounted earmuffs five years from their date of manufacture. Always follow the manufacturer's instructions for inspection, maintenance and replacement.

Keep Your Crew Connected

From coordinating rigging operations to communicating with your ground crew, staying connected makes a difference on the job.

The Notch Hook Ups bring helmet-mounted hearing protection and integrated communication speakers together in one practical setup for arborists who work around noisy equipment and need to stay in touch with their crew.
